Unit 1:

Subject: Language Arts

Essential Question(s):  What is a community? & Why do we need others?

Objective:         Students are going to learn and understanding what is a community

The students will identify and name some community helpers.
Students are going to learn and understanding why do we need other?

Goal(s):            The goal of this lesson is to help children understand the roles of a variety of community helpers and how they can help us in our community.

Procedure:       Students are going to read a book “What Is A Community” by On The Mark Press, http://www.mpmschoolsupplies.com/p-27170-what-is-a-community-grade.aspx?ad_id=product-alsoBought. Then students are going to see a power point presentation http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/sammoody63-345265-community-helpers-power-point-jobs-careers-education-ppt-powerpoint/ that will give them more information on the subject. Students are going to set down in the carpet to have a discussion about the subject.

Activity:            Students are going to write in their writing journal a fictional story about community helpers and their duties. Also they are going to draw a community including different community helpers

Unit 2:

Subject: Art

Objective:      Students are going to learn and understanding what is a community

                       The students will identify and name some community helpers.

Goal(s):            To let students express their reactions, feelings, and understanding about the subject by transferring into a self portrait

Procedure:       Students are going to see 2 videos in You Tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-zd7sqqTlM&list=PL5hFHAEVlO0oNdtSJdgmop_cqJEHrdIzb and https://www.youtube.com/watchv=PF5yzeohTjs&index=2&list=PL5hFHAEVlO0oNdtSJdgmop_cqJEHrdIzb.  Then the students are going to do a mini research using http://www.kidzsearch.com in which community helper they like the best

Activity:           Students are going to draw themselves as future community helper by using butcher                         paper, markers and colors
